Look Out! ... Political Mudslides!

     It's started to get ugly.

Now we all know that politics is a mean business. After all, the Latin root of the word tells it all ... Poli (meaning many) and tics (blood sucking insects)!

But up until a few weeks ago, it looked like the upcoming Fort Lauderdale Municipal Elections might just be different. The campaign trail was courteous, almost genteel.  But with just six weeks to go until the Primary Election, (scheduled for February 10th) , things have taken a turn for the worse.

Accusations of financial difficulties, lawsuits, disgruntled clients, even porn purchases! So far, the mud has only started it's oozy slide in the Mayoral race, and only between some supporters of two of the four Mayoral candidates, former Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Dean Trantalis, and former Lt. Colonel Earl Rynerson.

The Candidates themselves both say it's all ridiculous, and they just want to be judged on their merits, but so far, they haven't been able to keep rogue supporters in check.

                            Earl Rynerson                                                                  Dean Trantalis

For starters, both candidates are openly gay, and it appears that some of their fans think there's just not enough room in this town for two "First Gay Mayors of Fort Lauderdale". That brawl played out last week in the comment section of an unrelated post on this blog. To read all those comments,  click  here -  http://blog.timsmith.com/2008/12/21/picture-caption-contest-winners.aspx#Comment  .

Now it's gotten even uglier. An e-mail is being circulated entitled "The Truth about Earl Rynerson" . Let's just say it not so flattering!

It purports to be from an avowed Trantalis supporter and states that "I feel I can't sit by and let a good man like Dean Trantalis be dragged through the mud", and then does it's own dragging of Rynerson.

Let's hope this is a momentary lapse, that it's not just the tip of the iceberg, and things will soon get back to civility. But don't hold your breath while waiting!

Ridiculous is the right word for this war of words. First, if both candidates are vying to be the first openly gay Mayor why not let them battle it out in the arena of "ideas" without the mud-slinging. And, two, there are other candidates in the race so what makes either of these two or their supporters think it is an exclusively "gay" thing? Hubris isn't a word that could be used in this instance....is it?

The battle is to get a new Mayor - one that represents all of the people - not just special interst. One that knows the entire community and its needs and will work for us all.

These two may battle but my guess is it is for second and third....certainly not first.

They are short on real issues - the only have the ones they have made up - and one who served before should know that but doesn't seem to.

Get in touch with the problems that exist today and the greater ones we are facing and tell us how you will solve that - and stop the stupid misbehavior!

If you are going to write about candidates invoved in lawsuits then you should write about Dean and The Waves project. Dean cost many city residents their savings when he released the escrow money to the developer before anything was built. Your writings on here have always been pretty even as such I hope you will disclose everyones lawsuits in due time.

I guess some still haven't learned the lesson of the recent national elections: We the people are sick and tired of personal attacks by candidates and their supporters...and what we REALLY want is to be INSPIRED to vote by a candidate for his/her ideas and proposed solutions to the problems and issues of the day!

If you can't inspire your fellow citizens through intellect, experience and ideas, you'll simply be relegated to irrelevance...or as in the case of those who insist on vile, personal attacks as a 'strategy', you'll end up in the same gutter as your 'strategy' came from.

Tim - My name is Mark Goodrich we met last week. I have been involved in politics for 22 years winning many Elections both Statewide and Nationally; and I am currently Earl's Campaign Manager.

I will promise to you now publicly that under NO circumstances will Earl Rynerson's campaign for Mayor be about being the first gay Mayor. Quite frankly Ft. Lauderdale does not have the luxury to be concerned about should matters with our current budget crisis.

I will also state that since I have been aboard we have NOT in any way said ANY unkind word about Dean nor will we. If anyone reads any e-mails regarding this campaign seeming to come from Earl - they should know that I swear on my two year old little girl’s life that I had no knowledge of it nor did Earl.

We plan to run a positive campaign based on the issues and if we are going to "attack" somebody we will be up front not do it anonymously!  That is right Jack Seiler fifteen year - out of work - politician from Wilton Manors, we will be attacking YOU!

And Dean supporters we are sorry to say but Dean is not even mentioned in our 6000 word Campaign Plan.

We will want Dean's supporters to back Earl in the run-off so we are not that dumb to agitate the voters who we will want to support us on March 10th.

Keep up the good work Tim.

    Mr Rynerson or Mr. Goodrich

As a long time resident of Fort Lauderdale I am shocked at your recent post on here. Mr. Trentalis has been an inportant part of this community for decades. It is one thing to be confident in your campaign but to insult Dean as you have done here is disgusting. Then to not only insult Dean but then assume his supporters will endorse you is arrogant. You say in one sentence you are not going to attack anyone then you attack Mr. Seiler and Dean thereafter, just insulting.

One glaring thing you left out, what is the story with these lawsuits against Mr. Rynerson? In all your chest thumping you don't say the allegations sent to Mr. Smith are lies. Maybe Mr. Rynerson should address his own problems instead of trying to distract everyone with negatives about others. Such actions ring of guit.

Mr. Smith I think you owe it to your readers to put forth the informations you received and let the people decide since Mr. Rynerson does not want to address it.

Politics is such a nasty game....on the surface, all this appears to be the fur flying amongst the gay candidates, which is totally childish and not in character for a future Mayor.
I have this funny feeling that perhaps some of the comments submitted in your blog may be coming from one of the straight candidate's camps, fueling the anti-gay sentiment that exists in the city.I bet Naugle is loving this!
Remember, the queen of nasty campaigns (Stern) is managing one of the Mayoral contenders-something to think about,folks.......

I had a chance to read the documents on the Buddy Nevins Blog and I have to say I was disturbed. I was disturbed because I think Mr. Rynerson claims that he is the candidate of fiscal responsibility yet has outstanding judgments against him. I am also disturbed because Fort Lauderdale does not need another media lightning rod as to the issue of homosexual activities. What goes on in ones home is fine but to put yourself in a situation where your habits are seen by the world show a lack of leadership and responsibility.

Mr. Rynerson qualifying is this week, if you can about our city then do us all a favor and take a pass.

The city needs a mayor who supplements the image of the coty but not bigger then the city.
