Tim's Pick ... District IV

District IV  is the southern part of the city.

It takes in most of the Downtown, the southern-most portion of the beach, and the 17th Street Causeway neighborhoods. It rolls through upscale Rio Vista and wanders past historic Sailboat Bend.
Then it heads south and west up Davie Boulevard and ends up at the City's southern boundary by the Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

The seat has belonged to term-limited Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson for the past nine years. The race to decide her replacement seems close.

Many race watchers think it might be boiling down to a match-up between Romney Rogers and Coleman Prewitt.

                                               Rogers                             Prewitt

Rogers is old school,  Prewitt is the new comer.

     I'm supporting Prewitt
. ....................  and here's why!

........... Prewitt's been very impressive on the campaign trail. He's exceedingly bright, and has been demonstrating a solid grasp of all the issues. He talks about his " four-point plan", a road map for Fort Lauderdale's future. And, he has the support of many of the neighborhood leaders in the District.
I've  watched many of the debates, and interviewed both men, and in my opinion, Prewitt has stood out as the most  passionate, well prepared, and thoughtful candidate of the group.

Rogers is also a most impressive citizen, and a sincere man. He has given much of his life to altruistic endeavors, but seems to represent the past of Fort Lauderdale instead of the future. He has been endorsed by political giants Jim Naugle and E. Clay Shaw. If Rogers wins, he will make a most capable Commissioner.

Also in the race are Jim Lewis, a locally infamous attorney with a folksy anti-development campaign, and George Trodella, a local businessman who hasn't seemed to catch much fire.

.............  thanks, I'll be back with more soon! .................... Tim

Great assessment Mr. Smith and good choice. Prewitt has been out in the community and neighborhoods over the last 2 years and has become known for his willingness to participate. He is knowledgeable and hardworking and comes without the "old boy system" - something I think we are needing. He does his homeworks, listens to the residents, rolls up his sleeves and helps get the job done. With the economy what it is, he has given a very good outline of where we need to go and how we need to get there...no smoke and mirrors, a solid plan. He is well respected by his peers and the public that has had the pleasure to meet him. I am very glad that he knocked on my door.

I for one will be supporting Prewitt - he has shown me that he can and will get the job done.

I am hoping for a Coleman victory as well, I've truly enjoyed listening to his thoughts on actually trusting the public sentiment on matters as evidenced by his participation in organization whose grass roots efforts are bearing fruit now. I hope he continues to look to the constituency for their thoughts and ideas while navigating through the perilous times ahead.

It's nice to see that someone in Fort Lauderdale FINALLY GETS IT.

This city election is about new faces and new ideas. Frankly, I was surprised to see the Sun-Sentinel endorse Coleman, since they seem to represent the "old guard" mentality.

Coleman is bright, energetic and an exciting new face in city politics.

You could easily be right on this one, Tim...especially if last fall's election results are representative of the massive scale of 'change' taking place in the thinking and attitudes of voters everywhere across this nation.

With a boost in stature for Prewitt today from the Sun-Sentinel's recognition (and yours, too, of course!) of him, it may well be that the 'wave of change' signaled by last fall's presidential and congressional elections is much more of permanent, generational change in the electorate at all levels...and not just a one-time 'throw the bum out' reaction to the Bush years, as many still argue. Guess we'll just have to wait until next week for more definitive answers.

Prewitt has high integrity and knows the issues within the city of fort lauderdale. He is a proven leader and I only wished I lived in the district so I could cast my vote. He not only will represent his district well, but the city as a whole. He doesn't have hidden agendas(as Rogers does) He truely has the city's best interest at heart. He will be an asset to the commission and I look foward to his being on the dias creating the necessary changes in the city.
