...... got crime?
They say when economies tank, crime inevitably follows.
Fort Lauderdale is no exception, at least in January. But was crime up in your neighborhood? We'll answer that for you in just a minute.
Let's look at the Big Picture first. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department reports that violent crimes City-Wide (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), were up 10% this January over last January. And property crimes (burglary, car thefts/break-ins, and other larcenies) were up 4% over last year.
But these increases are relatively small compared to increases in cities like Boston, St. Louis, Orlando, and Detroit, where violent crime categories have surged 20% to 30%. And Fort Lauderdale Police officials say February numbers, due out any day, are looking much better. But where are the most serious problems occurring in Fort Lauderdale? ............ and ..........
what neighborhood is winning the least coveted "most crimes" distinction so far this year ? ....
It's South Middle River, with 36 major crimes already reported in the first month of 2009. South Middle River is a sprawling neighborhood north of Sunrise Boulevard and east of Powerline Road. It has dozens of ways in and out (a crook's preference), hodge-podge zoning that inhibits homeowners looking out for their neighbors, and a very diverse make-up that includes a mix of gays moving in and gentrifying, and many of the city's poorest Haitian immigrants.
FLPD keeping watch on SMR's drug dealer problems
Compare SMR's crime totals (36), to other neighborhoods in the city. Here is a sampling of safer neighborhoods, crimes reported, in January:
Bal Harbour - 0
Beverly Heights - 1
Collee Hammock - 2
Dolphin Isles - 1
Nurmi Isles - 0
Galt Ocean Mile - 3
Harbor Beach - 1
Rio Vista - 3
Sunrise Intracoastal - 0
But there are other neighborhoods with substantial amounts of crime also:
Mayor Jack Seiler's neighborhood (Coral Ridge) reported (12) crimes, Commissioner Bruce Roberts' (Imperial Point) reported (7) and coming in near the top of the list, at #3, with (25) crimes reported, is Dorsey Riverbend, home of
Police Chief Frank Adderley !
(feeling the pain!)

I have lived in the area of South Federal Highway for some twenty seven Years and we still have problems with Drugs and Prostitution. I am convinced we will not see a real change until we as Residents demand Court Reform and be willing to pay to lock the offenders UP.

South Middle has tried hard to fix the crime. The city needs to do more for them. and isn't the Sunrise Intracaostal where Teel lived?. no wonder she didn't care. she had no crime

Since living in SMR for almost 20yrs.,it seems that the biggest problem contributing to our crime is 60% rentals with landlords who neglect their property. Many owner occupied homes have no pride in their property. Code and the police department have been very involved to no avail. Economical development is greatly needed to rid us of the slum housing. How about a big box store that can take up several blocks?

Charlene.....I think you have it right...economic redevelopment is the only sustainable solution !

Well I know when the politicians ask for my support in the future...my number one question will be, "How are you going to help us prevent crime in South Middle River?" If they even hesitate before answering...I will say thank you very much...I am voting for someone who has an answer...and shut the door.

The crimes on the Galt are under-reported, because the biggest crimes are committeed each day by the corrupt condo boards.

How about the 70grand taken by Dan Lewis, Steve Kelly and Mark Goodrich off of Rynerson to only get 15% of the vote, now thats a crime. How about Steve Gaskill getting 80grand off of Hutchinson and Trentalis another crime.

Crime! Oh yes the crime in our city.
How about getting rid of George G. & his side kicks, put the salaries that they make, hire more police officers to help rid with the crime.
This city does not have enough officers to rid the crime that we have. As our city grows ~ our police department does not.
I blame the court system as well. Yes, the court syetem. One gets arrested, bails out of jail, goes to court & gets his walking papers to continue with his crime. How many times does one get breaks in our wonderful justice system? Ask me, more than enough.

dont blame the court system this county in under federal order to reduce the jail population. that is why its a revolving door

The whole system "Sucks!"
Only out to make the "bucks"
In recent months past I have seen how the system works, collects the cash, gives credit for class. What has one learned from these classes? NOTHING!!!!
If all of this is caused by a so called Federal Order, than something must be changed in the whole system.

More Police..I am curious does anyone here know what the true dollar amount the city has payed out for police misconduct cases amounts too?
In light of some very negative publicity by various police departments of late, wouldnt it be wise to look into "judgement amounts" and patterns of police behavor BEFORE we hire more police with oversight problems? If memory serves me..we paid out the equivalent of 8 police starting salaries (ft.Lauderdale) in the last two years alone. With many more still pending...Just a thought

Seems our infamous system is at it again..Convicted sex offender now residing at the Budget Inn @ 2731 N. Federal Highway, curious how do you feel about picking up this guys tab? How would you feel if you were some unsuspecting tourist who drove in around midnight looking for a place for your family to stay? I bet many of you are oblivious to the amount of sex offenders staying at hotels thruout Florida on Your Dime.. How lucky do you feel 33306?
