Gretsas: To Be, or Not To Be?

City Managers know one thing for certain. Someday, they will quit or be fired!

Floyd Johnson, Fort Lauderdale City Manager from 1998 until 2003, never saw his day coming. He was fired without warning in the middle of a City Commission meeting. Former City Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson, under attack with her colleagues for a tight budget year, called for his head, and off his head went!

George Hanbury was the Manager before Johnson. He wasn't fired, but quit eight years into the job after relentless attacks by former Mayor Jim Naugle made the job unbearable.

And this Tuesday, current Fort Lauderdale City Manager George Gretsas'  city employment  is on the line.

                                                                  Gretsas

Gretsas has survived for over five years now. He has both detractors, and fans, both in the citizenry and the City Commission.
His most vocal detractor has been City Commissioner Charlotte Rodstrom, who calls for his head, or sharply criticizes him at nearly every meeting. Tuesday will be her chance to see if she can talk at least two other Commissioners into sending Gretsas packing.

Connected insiders say it is playing out this way -

Rodstrom and City Commissioner Bruce Roberts would like to find a new Manager. Roberts quit his post a few years back as Fort Lauderdale Police Chief, blaming Gretsas for his exit.

New Commissioners Dubose and Rogers are said to be fans of Gretsas. They'll vote to keep him, making it a 2-2 tie!

     That leaves Mayor Seiler !

 Gretsas and Seiler

Seiler says the Gretsas employment matter has been quite explosive. He's fielded at least 50 calls on the matter, both pro-Gretsas and anti-Gretsas, but he won't say what he'll do on Tuesday. One thing's for sure - Seiler likes to keep the ship in calm waters, whenever possible.

But Tuesday's weather could turn stormy !

The vote for FPL was very disappointing and Commissioner Rogers and Dubose and Mayor Voted for it and on that issue I can agree with many of there concerns but to let City manager Gretsas stay is not understood my me... First his salary is way out of line... Second so many Negative. Voices have been heard about Him... Third and the poor Job that occurred under Gretsas with Alarm Fees/ Hud/FPL/Police/Water works/Fire Bond/ and Forth the Gretsas track record from White Plains New York that Kingdom way of Governing this is not the Fort Lauderdale I believe want. I believe most want a open City Government and one that is inviting Like that TV show Mr Rogers !!!!

Ask yourselves? This guy got more bad press over the years than corrupt city commissioners...are we better off than we were before he came to town? One of the the criteria for city managers is to have the foresight to plan for rainey days...did he? No he made himself the core of the city not its growth or well being..we have way too many people with high-dollar positions in the city and the county that should have never been put in their positions at their pay scale, they lay waste to other cities and slink into town and WE HIRE THEM...Bertha Henry as County administrator and Gretsas...what were our "powers that be" thinking..

As someone who has been civicly active for more than 20 years, the implementation of george's gag order at the police dept. and non-resident input in the city sealed my negative opinion of him. they should fire him and find somebody who feels that the citizenry is an intricate part of fabric of a strong city.

I don't have nothing to gain from gretsas now, but I think he did the best he could with all the lazy bums I worked with. he has grown with the job and should be given a chance to go on. change his contract so it's not so sweet and keep him.

As a retired police officer for the City of Fort Lauderdale and past member of one of the finest PD's in the State of Florida I feel he needs to go. His management style of micro management does not work. I for one feel he should move on and let the PD/FD managers do what needs to be done for the citizens of Fort Lauderdale.
