Again, I am no fan of Gretsas but as a former Assistant City Manager and long-time government executive, I recognize the balancing act necessary to serve the anticipated 5 year tenure of most managers. If my memory serves, Gretsas came out at the bottom of the search vetting process but the sitting Commission hired him. Regardless of his managerial style which has been termed dictatorial, he could not have survived as long as he did without carrying out the policy directives set by the City Council. Managers that I served under many times marched to that policy drumbeat well aware that they were treading on troubled terrain and sowing the seeds of their own destruction.
Add to that the problem that City Commissions have frequent turnovers and within the space of an election the Manager could find himself serving at the pleasure of a former representative of a group that had opposed his policies. I won't mention the obvious here as anyone who knows his Latin will undoubtedly understand my oblique reference.
Again, Gretsas met his fate but lasted far longer than many had predicted. As for the Mayor's explanation, talk about gilding the proverbial political lily..Best Gremlin Reply to this
