Gretsas Mania
City Manager George Gretsas draws fanatical fans and furious foes.
Seems many either love him or hate him ! His fans turned out in big numbers at the last Commission meeting, extolling his many talents and city management prowess!
Many in the opposition, on the other hand, generally stay in the shadows, grumble behind his back, whisper about his ouster.
One detractor is the exception. And his smoldering anger might be bordering on Gretsas Ouster Obsession, hereafter known by the acronym GOO !
See what I mean below -
Seventy-eight pictures of Gretsas. Activist Cal Deal digitized the tape of the meeting showing Gretsas every 5 seconds during Gretsas's attempt to save his job. He posted them today on his new web site, built with the express purpose of seeing that the Gretsas contract isn't ever renewed.
Here's a sample of that web site.
If you have GOO, or are just curious, Deal's site is at FortLauderdaleObserver.com
No action is expected on the Gretsas contract at tomorrow's Commission meeting.

Ahhhh...Idle hands (& minds) are the Devil's Workshop! Makes one wonder whether these obsessed folks have productive lives or whether they live for their moment in cyber-space...

That's a funny comment coming from someone typing a comment on a blog.

I think that it's somewhat sad that media propaganda has the ability to sway voters one way or another. It's too bad that not everyone sees the same point of view. I hope in this particular case deciding the position of City Manager, the right decision is made.

On the one occasion I sat at the table with George in behalf of my civic association he was attentive and expedited the process for every item we were having problems with. For this I am eternally grateful . On another occasion I marched next to him at Father Charles Haitian festival of flag day. George was personable and polite to everyone there. One more time at a South Middle River Civic Association event he walked with our board through our neighborhood to view first hand the squalor of our blighted area. Now I hear from some that suggest he is a devil. Whats up with that?

Its amazing when a person goes back and reads comments by commissioners in White Plains (2004) where the city manager hails from. Many of Gretsas fellow city leaders had alot of "No Comments" when his announcement to leave White Plains to take a job with Ft. Lauderdale was decided. I am curious, when the city or county or state is headhunting for persons in such critical positions, what is the criteria for that hiring or appointing process? More than once this area has spent alot of money on people who have literally layed waste in their prior positions and yet we hire them only to be shaking our heads at a later date. Gretsas brought in Chief Adderley and for the life of me, I just cant wrap my head around this much turmoil surrounding one guy who is in charge of such a large department. Seriously, shouldnt their be more stringent criteria for hiring or appointing city leaders? And how can contracts be so iron clad that in the most blatant examples of mismanagement, ineptness, corruption or discord with the community the caveat to "stop the bleeding" cant be utilized? How in the world are other cities suppose to take Ft. Lauderdale serious when we have this kind of publicity? Commissioners up to their eyeballs in corruption? Police Chief's appearing out of nowhere to steer an investigation? Town Adminstrators who were run out of a previous town on a rail, election supervisors who miscalculated 4 million dollars on a Presidental election, I mean seriously where do we get these people? At some point, we are going to have to ask ourselves, when is enough enough? It reminds me of idiots contantly putting their hands in fire and being told it doesnt burn...
