Moving the Historic Shippey House ....Update
Preservation activists are still in the middle of trying to save "the house".

It's one of the oldest homes in the City -( 1914 )- referred to as the Shippey House, named after it's long time owner ........
...
Judge Fred Shippey,
Broward County's second Judge.
Shippey was well known in his day. He was a "marryin" Judge, who married most folks in the area, including "Tarzan"!
The house fell into serious disrepair over the last decade or so, and was about to be demolished, when local citizen activists decided to try and save, and restore it.
The restoration effort is being led by ...

activist Alysa Plummer, (shown here with Mayor Jack Seiler)
It's been a tough road for Alysa and her "Friends of the Shippey House", and it's not over yet!
A "memo" from the Fort Lauderdale Legal Department highlights the challenges. The memo tells City Manager Feldman that "the House is still sitting on the Moving Company's girders awaiting attachment to the non-existing foundation".
The foundation was to have been in by now, but a dust-up with the House moving company owner had him request that his "name be removed as contractor from the permits".
Also, the memo states that the house is sitting on city parking spaces that are costing the city "$218.00 per diem".

hole the house is supposed to be in by now
Plummer is undeterred, in her standard, pleasant way.
This morning she reports that there is a new contractor on record, that a fund raising effort last week raised the funds needed for the completion of the foundation, and that the fact that 3 members of the Fort Lauderdale City Commission attended the fund raiser is a good sign that things are still on track.
...... I'll keep you informed .

And who's responsible for maintenance after the building is moved???
MRT had the Annie Beck House moved to our Park, and now renovation and maintenance are both kind of up in the air.

I wish our city's commissioners were as interested in our failing city public schools as they are in this old house. Fair disclosure, I donated $300 bucks to this project, I would much rather have donated the money to a fundraiser led by city official to redeem our city's schools and give this city the tools it needs to compete for the residency of the middle and upper middle families in the 21st century.

they are but probably won't get to it till their third and final term. need to take care of developers and special interests first.

Wait I thought Jackie Scott had stepped away from the Friends during her campaign, yet somehow she was one of three speakers who addressed the crowd at the event, the others being the Mayor and Comm Rogers. That is a pretty prominant speaking slot for someone removed from the Board. Guess we know Jackie had no intention of really leaving the Friends and everything else they do is merely about promoting Jackie's candidacy.

Listen... save Fred's house...It'll be a mess, the Judge was pretty sloppy, but you've hardly saved anything from my day ! And there's not much left!

That little "dust up" is actually -
1. Failure of "Friends of Shippey House" to return a signed contract to the mover.
2. Failure of "Friends of Shippey House" to prepare the site to receive the house.
3. Failure of "Friends of Shippey House" to pay mover according to the payment schedule as provided on the contract that was never returned.
4. Due to the habitually delinquent payments by "Friends of Shippey House" officers, the mover has declared "Friends of Shippey House" in default of the contract that was never returned and will no longer operate on "good faith" and removed my name from the permits and
really don't trust these people any farther than I could throw them

According to City Records New World Builders is now the GC on the Shippey House. Charles Jordan is finally in a position to make money on this deal. Burdette and Modern should file a lien on the City's property to make sure they get paid before he does.

Charles Jordan advocated tirelessly for years to save this house, and this is going back to 2007-2009. He deserves to have a hand in restoration and even better of paid. No payments will equal his pro bono efforts before Code Enforcement, Unsafe Structures, Planning and Zoning and countless city comm mtgs making a case for preservation

Jordan accused the Mayor of being a crook. You are right; he should be rewarded.
